INTERNATIONAL PUBLIC LECTURE:
ACTION RESEARCH, MICROFINANCE AND POVERTY REDUCTION:
INCREASING ACADEMIC RELEVANCE

DR. DAVID S. GIBBONS
S.D.K.

19 OCTOBER 2011
10.00 AM

UNIVERSITY CONFERENCE HALL [DEWAN PERSIDANGAN UNIVERSITI] UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA

Dr. David Gibbons, a political scientist by academic discipline, joined USM’s School of Comparative Social Sciences, in 1970. Due to his strong research interest, he moved to the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) in 1974 and conducted a number of rural poverty research in Malaysia and Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. His historic encounter with Professor Muhamad Yunus, the founder of the Grameen bank, in Comilla, Bangladesh, in October 1985 transformed his life and commitment to action research by replicating the Grameen Bank approach to poverty reduction not only in Malaysia but also in Indonesia, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Dr. Gibbons is a prominent practitioner with over 25 years of experience in managing poverty-focussed microfinance institutions, especially in Malaysia and India. This international lecture on microfinance at the crossroad will feature the challenges confronting the global microfinance movement namely mission drift (limited emphasis to the mission of banking on the poor and women), and over obsession to institutional profitability.

We take this opportunity to invite interested individuals and organisations to the international public lecture. Please download the poster and tentative programme for further information. Kindly complete the reply form and return to us via email to waringin77@yahoo.com or fax (+604 6566379) no later than 14 October 2011.

There is no registration fee and CPD points will be awarded to USM staff for the participation.
